I've never been a great fan of the South. Every time I have visited the region, I've never felt completely comfortable. It may be that it is a distinct culture within America that one has to be born in to understand it (although they make some great food), as well as the fact that it is far more conservative than the rest of the country by a long shot...and as a 'bleeding heart liberal', so to speak, that also bothers me.
But when I see stories like this (go read it) - and then see that a majority of the people who voted in the online poll don't find something like that racist - it makes me wonder just exactly how much progress has been made in terms of racial relations, or if the progress that has been made makes it easier for everyone to paper over the deep, underlying difficulties that still exist.
